The task
Dress a dining room in a hand-painted look: a green chinoiserie-style wallpaper with birds and flowering branches on the upper walls, and a clean painted wainscot below it.
What we did
The room was wrapped on several walls, so the job was as much about continuity as about hanging paper. Large scenic patterns like this one usually have a long repeat, and every drop has to be matched to its neighbor so the branches and birds continue across the seams. That means planning where the first drop goes, so the most visible wall gets the best placement and the pattern meets the least visible corner.
Below the paper, a chair rail divides the wall, and the lower section is finished with painted paneling in white. The chair rail gives the wallpaper a crisp bottom edge and protects the lower wall from chair backs, which matters in a dining room more than anywhere else in the house.
The paper also had to work around the room’s existing crown molding, door and window casings, and a pair of louvered closet doors, each of which needs careful trimming so the pattern does not look chopped off.
