A small historic downtown with a fast-growing south side
Winter Garden has two very different halves. The old town grew up along Plant Street, where the downtown historic district and the separate historic residential district were both added to the National Register in 1996. The residential district’s houses include bungalows and Craftsman, Prairie School and Colonial Revival designs from the first half of the twentieth century. Lake Apopka sits to the north; the downtown’s Edgewater Hotel opened in the years when the lake drew fishermen.
South of the old town the picture changes completely. The city grew from about 14,000 residents in 2000 to almost 47,000 in 2020. Right across the southern line is Horizon West, an unincorporated master-planned area on former citrus groves, with villages built around schools and parks and Hamlin as its town center. Many people we talk to call it Winter Garden, and it is part of our regular route.
New builds, tall rooms and blank walls
Horizon West has been built out since Orange County approved its first village in 1997; one neighborhood near Hamlin, Overlook at Hamlin, added 381 homes between 2014 and 2019 alone. When a house is that new, the walls are flat, the studs are evenly spaced and nothing has been patched, which makes framing a niche or running a wire for a wall-mounted fireplace straightforward.
The challenge is height and emptiness. Open plans with a tall family room leave one wall that does all the work, usually the one facing the sofa. If the room is two stories, a slat or paneled wall can look unfinished when it stops at eight feet, so we plan where the design should end: at the ceiling, at a ledge, or at the line of the upstairs balcony. Taller walls need scaffolding and more material, and we show that difference in the price instead of hiding it.
New-construction owners also tend to ask for the wall before the furniture arrives. That is a good time for us: open floors, no artwork to move, and electrical changes can be done by a licensed Florida electrician before anything is mounted.
The older streets near Plant Street
Close to downtown we slow down. Original trim, older wiring and rooms laid out for a different era mean the wall has to respect the house. Painted paneling, picture-frame molding or a modest built-in usually suit those rooms better than a dark full-height media wall.
Our work in Winter Garden
In April 2026 we installed a porcelain slab accent wall in Winter Garden, 5 by 10 feet, for about $5,500. Large slabs are heavy and unforgiving, so the wall behind them has to be checked and prepared before the first piece goes up.
There is no trip fee for coming out to measure, and the drive from downtown Orlando takes about 25 minutes outside rush hour.
