Painted Picture-Frame Molding and Wainscoting in Loughman, FL

The task

Add architectural detail to plain drywall in several areas of the home with painted molding: a living-area wall around a window, the walls at the entry, and a full room in white.

What we did

Picture-frame molding looks simple, but it is all about proportion. Before any trim went up, the walls were laid out so the frames are evenly spaced, line up with windows and doors, and leave the same margin at the ceiling, the floor and the corners. On the wall with the window, the frames are sized so the window sits inside the grid rather than interrupting it.

At the entry, the molding runs alongside a tall double front door, with stacked panels that follow the height of the door. In the third space, the molding covers the walls in a full grid of upper frames and lower panels, all painted white, so the room reads as paneled rather than just trimmed.

Every joint was mitered, filled and caulked before painting. The trim and wall were then painted the same color in each space — a soft gray-green in one area, white in another — which is what makes the frames look built into the wall instead of applied to it.
