The task
Give a wall with an old, patched surface a formal look: a deep navy color and tall picture-frame molding, under an existing chandelier.
What we did
The wall started out in rough shape, with holes and marks from whatever had hung there before. The first part of the job was repair: filling, sanding and getting the surface smooth enough for a dark color. Dark paint shows every flaw in the wall behind it, so this step matters more with navy than with a light neutral.
The wall was then painted navy, and the molding layout was marked with a laser line so every frame is plumb and evenly spaced. The frames are tall and narrow, set in a row across the wall, which draws the eye up toward the chandelier and makes the ceiling feel higher.
Thin molding was installed for each frame, with mitered corners, then filled and finished. In the finished photos the frames read as fine dark lines against the navy, adding detail without making the wall busy.
The room was in use during the job, so the furniture near the wall was wrapped in plastic and the floor covered while the crew worked.
