Black Media Wall with Electric Fireplace and Lit Floating Shelves in Sarasota, FL

The task

The living room had a bare wall with a single cable hanging from it. The goal was a compact, dark media wall with a fireplace and a few shelves for decor — at the entry price point for this kind of work.

What we built

A framed bump-out now stands in front of the original wall. It was built from wood studs with a header across the top, which gave room inside for the fireplace, the TV wiring and the outlets, so the hanging cable is gone for good.

The bump-out is finished in dark horizontal panels. A linear electric fireplace is set low in the face, with a wood mantel shelf above it and the TV above the mantel. The warm wood of the mantel is the only light tone on the wall, and it breaks up the black surface nicely.

On each side of the bump-out, floating shelves step down the wall. Each shelf has its own color-changing light, so the homeowners can set the side walls to a soft white for everyday use or to color for movie nights and game days.

The fireplace and the shelf lighting were wired by a licensed Florida electrician.
