Painted Shiplap Accent Wall in a Winter Park Bedroom

The task

Cover the wall behind the bed with horizontal shiplap and finish it in a deep blue, so the bedroom gets a calm, textured wall that ties the room together.

What we did

The photos show the wall in several stages, from preparing and sheathing the surface to installing and painting the boards. The preparation does not show in the finished room, but it decides whether shiplap lines run straight and level across the whole wall or wander as they go.

The shiplap boards were then installed horizontally from the bottom up. Each board’s overlap creates the narrow shadow line that gives shiplap its look, so the gap has to stay consistent from one end of the wall to the other. Boards were cut around outlets and finished cleanly at the corners and ceiling line.

Once the boards were up, the wall was painted. The finished color is a muted blue that reads darker under the ceiling lights and softer in daylight from the window, and the shadow lines keep it from looking like a flat painted wall.

Timeline and budget

Done in 3 working days in February 2026. Project budget: about $4,900, toward the top of our $2,000–5,500 range for accent walls. Surface preparation and sheathing before the boards went up are part of that number.
